The FW10 collection for Robert Geller hit on some familiar themes from seasons past. The look of romantic eastern-european dandyism is definitely here but this season seems to be focused on more lux textiles ranging from fur to distressed leather. The leather pieces and accessories were definitely stand-outs however I’m not sure if the fur styling translated well. The color palette had pop colors of purple and blue once again and it seems that it would be easy to wear this seasons stuff with older pieces. All in all a step forward for the brand although I am still waiting to see the fabrics closer up.

Thanks to Amit for the camerawork.

I was fortunate enough to be at the Milk studios for the Tim Hamilton presentation at Milk Studios last friday. The line seems to have taken a more street oriented direction which i feel is positive considering menswear designers’ inclination to dress things “up”. The fit of the trousers looked quite on point as well as the black riders jacket. In my opinion the price point for the line has always been a bit high but time will tell if things are slightly more affordable this season in response to market changes. Theres always more room in a mans wardrobe for those simple easy to throw on classics and without doubt many men will find some of those in this fall/winter season.

As one of the standout menswear designers from the New York Fashion Week; Robert Geller comes back with a pretty strong Spring/Summer 2010 Collection. The materials shown seem lighter, more sporty and versatile. The colors are a good fit for the season without being as gimmicky as past seasons. While there’s not any particular pieces that stand out as must-haves the collection has a better feel and coherency than the last Spring/Summer offering. The plus side to the more sportswear inspired looks is that this collection will fit better into most men’s existing wardrobes.

The Spring/Summer 2010 Givenchy Collection for men seems like a regression from the stronger FW09 collection. While the same feel is here, the styling and pieces can often be described as gaudy. Instead of smoothy blending a street element ; designer Riccardo Tisci tries too hard to ensure every piece has the depth and detailing of his women’s line. I think his attempt to infuse a strong warrior element to the clothes actually backfired and instead made the collection feel more vulnerable and delicate. He makes too much of an effort to make clothes that deserve staring at. While there are some successes here (some of the suiting and the gold-adorned looks), overall I have to say this collection was a slight disappointment. Apparently Tisci was working with Micheal Jackson for some of his London engagements, unfortunately we never got to see the costumes on stage, and some of the ideas presented here should have stayed on the drawing board.

Juun J’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection is a mixed bag. While there are certainly some very dramatic impressive pieces like the jumpsuit trench, shiny techno shorts and oversize anorak there are some definite misses as well. The sandal-sneaks are a good attempt at something new but I can hardly seeing them being very appealing in person. The collection has some nice basics but it still comes across as a raf redux and there are some pieces that seem to come out of nowhere (the oversized crewneck pincho for example). If this was another designer perhaps this entire collection would’ve gotten a pass but seeing that his past work showed so much progress SS10 seems like a slight regression. Heres hoping Fall/Winter will be more impressive.

This collection is something that differs from the traditional Ann D formula. The obvious missing element being the total lack of shirting (one of her specialties), but beyond that this collection’s feel is less romantic and more modern than her recent work. I can’t help but feel the collection is a little bit flat and doesn’t have the depth of F/W 2009 which was particularly strong in my mind. Change can be good but with this collection it just seems unnecessary and forced, I don’t think Ann’s consumers go to her for patent shoes, tan blazers or leather headbands. That being said there are a few nice trousers here (even surprisingly wearable leather pants) but it just doesn’t live up to her own high standard.

The Spring/Summer 2010 Lanvin men’s collection is a standout of Paris men’s week. The color palette and sharp tailoring make it seem almost more like a fall collection than one for spring/summer. Despite the questionable styling choices in some looks (mainly the visors and many of the silky pants/shorts) this collection has really strong cohesion that stays true to to the Lanvin look. The high waisted trousers are well cut and there is a good mix of trim short tops mixed in with looser longer outwear. It’s a shame the footwear for this collection wasn’t stronger as Lanvin has put out many great shoes the last few years but nothing here really is a standout.

The MiharaYushiro spring/summer collection is a mix of great wearable pieces combined with terrific styling. While the influences here are somewhat obvious and the overall collection lacks a true feeling of cohesion; the pieces themselves look terrific. Japanese designers often struggle with finding a distinct look and sticking to it , but the slight schizophrenia of this line never becomes too distracting. Overall there’s some great buys here that will fit into a variety of wardrobes. I Can’t wait to see some of this product hit shelves so i can see the pieces up close.
